A Workplace That Cares: What Makes KVC Nebraska Special

KVC Nebraska offers team members the opportunity to make a lasting impact in a workplace where professionals find purpose and passion and serve the greater Nebraska community. In a field with significant burnout and turnover, KVC Nebraska has built a close-knit and award-winning workplace with people who genuinely care about the success and wellbeing of their colleagues.
What makes KVC Nebraska a great place to work? If you’re considering a career with KVC Nebraska, here is why you won’t regret it.
Professional Development and Growth Opportunities
KVC Nebraska’s leadership is passionate about employee engagement and strengths-building. From having a Gallup-certified strengths coach on the leadership team to investing heavily in growth and development, KVC Nebraska provides employees with ample opportunities to learn and grow personally, professionally and as team members.
“Using Gallup tools to understand our strengths and becoming very strengths-based here has been a game-changer,” says Administrative Assistant Supervisor Maggie Dworak, who has been with KVC Nebraska for 14 years. Maggie has enjoyed numerous professional development opportunities with her team, including reading Brené Brown’s Dare to Lead, Patrick Lencioni’s The Five Dysfunctions of a Team and John C. Maxwell’s The 360 Degree Leader.
In addition to internal development opportunities, KVC Nebraska provides employees with external opportunities. For example, the Developmental Disabilities (DD) Services team attended a conference in New Orleans for professionals in the space. “It was a great opportunity to travel with my team, make connections and see what’s going on in the larger developmental disabilities world,” shared Michaela Breault, KVC Nebraska’s Administrative Supervisor of Developmental Disabilities Services.
Supportive, Welcoming Team
KVC Nebraska is a small, close-knit team. With fewer than 60 employees, employees are able to connect and get to know each other, from longtime leadership to the newest team members. “KVC is a place that has always celebrated differences and been very welcoming of different people,” shares Breault.
Dworak values the integrity and follow-through of everyone on staff at KVC Nebraska. “We actually do what we say we’re going to do and act how we say we’re going to act,” she explains. “It’s a culture of belonging. There’s no hierarchy here. We’re a team.”
Dworak shared one story she heard from an administrative assistant whose job included restocking snacks once a week. This assistant happened to be restocking on a very cold, snowy day. When she arrived at the office to replenish snacks, both the KVC Nebraska president and two directors stopped what they were doing to help her unload and put everything away in the icy weather. The assistant was amazed at how these higher leadership individuals would take the time to help her with a task like that, but as Dworak puts it, “No one here looks at any task as menial.”
For Breault, what stands out most about KVC’s leadership is the willingness to have open, honest conversations and keep the shared end goal in mind. “That ability to not feel hostile or bad about the hard conversations is a really good sign when it comes to leadership,” she says.
Impactful Career
The work we do at KVC Nebraska is meaningful. We are strengthening families, empowering individuals with developmental disabilities, caring for the youth in our communities and so much more because we all need connection! In this line of work, it isn’t hard to see how our efforts have value. But KVC Nebraska goes the extra mile to make sure everyone feels valued and clings to that sense of purpose, whether your position is directly working with individuals and families, leading an internal team or supporting the work of others.
Dworak’s professional life has always been in the administrative field. What initially drew her to KVC Nebraska was the opportunity to make a difference through her work. “I liked the idea that I could be in this environment even though I didn’t have the social work background,” she says. “I could be in an administrative role, but know I was still going to make a difference.”
Many of these impacts take place through the everyday work here at KVC Nebraska. But special events and programs also contribute to meaningful impact. Breault especially enjoys the Holiday Heroes program each year, which allows her team to pick out individually curated gifts that they know the people they support in Shared Living will love.
Breault takes full advantage of any opportunity she gets to interact directly with the children and families we serve. “Even though I’ve always been in an administrative role, I’m doing something different or learning something new every day,” she shares.
A Passion for Personal Wellbeing
At KVC Nebraska, we take pride in our focus on wellness, even having received the Governor’s Award for Wellness last year. Our internal wellbeing committee works hard to ensure every employee has resources and opportunities for self-care and making healthy life choices throughout their work day and beyond. From walking challenges to guest speakers to chair yoga, the wellbeing committee offers incentivized events and programs that encourage employees to take care of themselves and have a good work-life balance.
“The work that we do encompasses us being ‘on’ all the time,” explains Breault. “But there’s encouragement here to be able to be ‘off,’ in a world where we’re ‘on’ all the time.” From flexible schedules to hybrid work that allows employees to work virtually from home to protecting employees’ time off, KVC Nebraska works hard to provide what Breault calls “the ability to balance all of life’s things with work.”
Workplace Wellbeing
KVC Nebraska also emphasizes a holistic approach to workplace wellbeing. Through its comprehensive research efforts, Gallup has identified the five universal elements of wellbeing. According to Gallup, the five elements are career, social, financial, physical and community:
- How you occupy your time or simply liking what you do every day: your Career Wellbeing
- Having strong relationships and love in your life: your Social Wellbeing
- Effectively managing your economic life: your Financial Wellbeing
- Having good health and enough energy to get things done on a daily basis: your Physical Wellbeing
- The sense of engagement you have with the area where you live: your Community Wellbeing
By considering all five aspects, we can support our team members at KVC Nebraska in achieving a full picture of wellness.
Dworak sees how this passion for employee wellbeing is rooted in KVC’s overall mission to help individuals and families in our communities achieve wellbeing. “What we want for the families that we work with, KVC wants for their employees and their families,” explains Dworak.
Internship and Practicum Opportunities
For students pursuing careers in social work or mental health, there’s no better learning experience than working alongside professionals in the field. KVC Nebraska offers internship and practicum opportunities that provide hands-on experience in areas like developmental disability support, foster care, in-home family therapy, and more. Students gain flexibility with KVC’s in-home model, build essential skills, and receive valuable mentorship from experienced professionals.
