Have you ever witnessed a child sharing their food or giving someone their toy? Children are naturally charitable. They have the compassion and giving traits already inside, but parents must also nurture these habits. Encouraging your child to give back to others in their community helps them develop empathy, appreciation, higher self-esteem and much more. Here are some ways that you can raise a charitable child:

1. Ask for your child’s input

Does your little one have a unique talent, a social personality or a love for animals? There are many ways kids can give back to the community that match up with what they are good at or have a passion for. Simply asking what interests them is a great place to start.

2. Teach thankfulness

How often do you count your own blessings? You can increase the amount of gratitude and awareness in your child’s life by asking them what they are thankful for. Showcasing the good fortune and hard work needed to have shelter, food, toys and other blessings in your life is an important part of raising a charitable child.

3. Help those closest to you

Is there someone right in your child’s school, neighborhood or community that you know could use some help? Maybe it’s a friend or family member, a student or a neighbor. In Nebraska, there are currently 4,325 children in the child welfare system who need loving foster homes. Helping those you know can build relationships and a strong sense of community in your child’s life.

4. Volunteer together

There are many nonprofit organizations who welcome volunteers of all ages. Bonding together as a family while doing an activity such as collecting gifts for children in foster care, creating a lemonade stand to raise money for a charity or reading books to children in hospitals are just some of the ideas families can do together.
