First Step Toward Recovery

Knowing where to begin seeking treatment for substance use disorders can be confusing. KVC’s Substance Use Disorder programming makes it easier to find treatment. With the support of a trained professional, clients will take the first step toward recovery and gain access to valuable treatment resources within their own communities.

Substance Use Evaluations

Evaluations are supported by standardized, rapid assessment tools that are credible to courts, probation officers and case managers. This comprehensive evaluation will provide diagnosis, level of care treatment recommendations and identify resources within the community that provide the recommended level of care.  After a completed evaluation, clients will be given resources or referrals for support until they can begin treatment.

With a non-biased, here-to-help approach our goal is to make the evaluation process as safe and convenient as possible. These evaluations are completed in the comfort of the client’s home, in the community, or in the KVC office —wherever the client is most comfortable. This eliminates any transportation barrier that may prevent individuals from seeking an evaluation. We schedule evaluations at days and times that work best for clients.

During evaluations, a client and the evaluator may discuss:

  • Drug and alcohol use
  • Health information
  • Mental health status
  • Education
  • Peer relationships
  • Legal issues
  • Work and/or school

Intensive Outpatient Program

Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) are treatment programs used to address substance use disorders that require a more intensive approach than Outpatient Therapy, but do not require detoxification or round-the-clock supervision. IOPs enable individuals to continue with their normal, day-to-day lives in a way that residential treatment programs do not. Clients will:

  • Participate in treatment sessions 3–5 times a week for 6–8 weeks.
  • Treatment sessions typically last 3–4 hours each day.
  • Treatment primarily consists of group therapy.

IOP at KVC is grounded in the Seeking Safety and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy counseling models. Treatment will allow clients to directly address both trauma and addiction. Seeking Safety is a coping skills-based, present-focused therapy designed to help individuals struggling with both trauma and substance use disorders. It focuses on building skills to manage triggers, emotions and relationships. Because the core principle of change is safety, both emotional and physical, we emphasize what individuals can do today to regain control over their lives, rather than delving into the trauma narrative. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy teaches practical skills that replace behaviors that are not currently working and effectively treats substance use disorders using evidence-based practices.

How Does Group Therapy Help Clients?

Multiracial young women hugging during emotional support group. Mental health, therapy, friendship.Participation in group therapy offers clients support in a variety of ways:

  • Enhance their communication skills.
  • Form new social groups. This is especially important in addiction treatment, as individuals’ previous socialization is often with others who use drugs or alcohol.
  • Access to an environment where people in similar situations provide support, comfort and honest feedback.
  • Reinforce healthy ways of interacting and provide a safe space that is vital to recovery efforts.
  • Group members who are farther along in their recovery often offer valuable assistance and empathy to those who are early in the recovery process.
  • A forum for therapists and group leaders to pass on important information, teach new skills and guide clients.
  • A place to witness positive behaviors associated with recovery and to practice new modes of dealing with addiction.
